Description
Original US Navy Model 1870 Bayonet & Scabbard - 2nd Pattern w/Straight Blade for the USN 1870 Navy Rolling Block Rifle - Very Nice Condition - RAREUp for sale is an Original US Navy Model 1870 Bayonet & Scabbard. This is the RARE 2nd pattern variation with the Straight Blade. This bayonet has a one piece cast-brass hilt, the grip section with fish-scale pattern, the birds head pommel with the escutcheon of the Naval Board of Ordnance on both sides, consisting of a pair of crossed Dahlgren naval guns over an anchor on a circular, grandular background. The back of the grip with a raised, flattened section with the spring to the right. Crossguard with muzzle ring and quillon with finial. The blade is approximately 20" and an overall length of 25". Blade is bright, no rust or pitting. The blade is marked Ames Mfg. Co, Chicopee, Mass & USN G.G.S. 1870. It has the Original Bayonet Scabbard with leather body and brass throat & tip. The leather is soft and supple. The stitching on the rear is intact, no splits. Several surface cracks in the leather. Nice patina color of the brass throat or tip.
