  • Conflict: Indian Wars (1866-97)
  • Modified Item: No
  • All returns accepted: ReturnsNotAccepted
  • Condition: The black leather is full length, unbroken and unaltered, with general alligator texture, and no surface loss. The leather is not dry, and is fully flexible with no flaking. There is a VERY faint arsenal stamp about 2" from the end of the billet and it appears to read WATERVLIET ARSENAL, but I can't get it to show up on a photo. You can barely see it if the light angler is just right. The brass snap hook for the saber has nice patina, and the leather attachment is very solid, with some wear on the bottom edge. The brass buckle also has nice patina, and the leather attachment for it has no issues at all. The web canvas is a little soiled, but is very solid with no fraying anywhere.

    Description

Original US M1885 Cavalry Cartridge Belt
Intended to carry the carbine cartridges for the Springfield Trapdoor carbine (45-55 405 loads for the mounted troops).  The later variants of the M1881 pistol holster could be slid over the top to carry the trooper's sidearm.
These were produced in two lengths, for large and small waist sizes, and this is the shorter version with 45 cartridge loops.
The black leather is full length, unbroken and unaltered, with general alligator texture, and no surface loss.  The leather is not dry, and is fully flexible with no flaking.  There is a VERY faint arsenal stamp about 2" from the end of the billet and it appears to read WATERVLIET ARSENAL, but I can't get it to show up on a photo.  You can barely see it if the light angle is just right.
The brass snap hook, for the saber, has nice patina, and the leather attachment is solid, with some wear on the bottom edge.
The brass buckle also has nice patina, and the leather attachment for it has no issues at all.
The web canvas is a little soiled, but is  very solid with no fraying anywhere.
This is a VERY nice example of a late Indian Wars era US Cavalry cartridge belt.  It will display beautifully on a mannequin for an Indian Wars impression.
