Indian Wars USN Hitchcock's Patent 1879 Cartridge Box
This is an original Indian Wars Hitchcock’s Pattern black leather cartridge box is marked “USN” in the classic oval on the front while the back is marked: Manufactured By/Joseph J. Walton/New York/Hitchcock`s Pat./Oct. 7. 1879”. The Navy was engaged extensively in the Indian Wars in Florida (the Seminoles) and along Mississippi and other waterways where Navy wood and coaling stations were attacked by various tribes and landings were made to attack hostile tribes. This period cartridge box has a side-break lid, two belt loops on the back and a partitioned cardboard liner within. The leather is still supple with some surface flaking and crazing while the hinge is not cracked nor are the loops. Stitching and hardware is sound throughout. This is a very collectable Indian Wars period cartridge box in condition that’s not often found.
