Up for auction at the Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio is an Antique, Hand Forged, French Model 1866 Chassepot Yataghan Sword Bayonet + Scabbard Made by St. Etienne in 1874. Engraved, in script, on the blade top:Mre d' Armes de St. Etienne 8bre

There are at least a dozen hallmarks, including those of the armorer, Director, and Controller.
The yataghan sword bayonet was for use on the M1866 Chassepot needle-fire rifle, named after its inventor, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot.
This bayonet is brass-hilted with a spring steel latching arrangement on the right side. The cross guard is iron and has a screw-type tightening arrangement on the muzzle ring. The lower quillion is a hooked, blade-breaker type. The blade is steel, single-edged, fullered on both sides with, of course, a double curve yataghan shape.
The scabbard has a five-digit serial number (as opposed to the usual four-digit).
