It's hard to believe that so few Matt Stover game worn jerseys have hit the market over the years, considering the guy played in the NFL for 20 years. My Google search revealed just one, a 2004 Ravens home jersey that originally came from NFL Auctions. The gem featured here is a Browns home jersey that I believe dates to the 1993 season, as I detail below. Manufactured by Russell, it is tagged a size 42 on the front tail. Under the manufacturer's tag are two flags, denoting 100% Nylon and 4" Extra Length (Russell jerseys with extra length were NOT available through retail!) The measurements are approx. 20-1/2 inches across from pit to pit, and approx. 38 inches in length from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the tail.
Light wear is present on this jersey, as may be expected from a kicker who probably wore this a couple of times. There's some light wear on the INSIDE of the jersey, where the fabric was in contact with shoulder pads. I cannot find any evidence of a nameplate or number change. The sleeve length shows approx. 3/4 inch of brown below the sleeve stripes, which was Stover's preference.
I believe this jersey dates to the 1993 season, as it's the first (and last) year the Russell "R" logos were found above the sleeve numbers on most Browns shirts (you can see countless examples of this on Getty). I've found a photo of Mark Bavaro wearing this style in 1992, but I'm guessing it was a custom order from later in the '92 season, and Bavaro was definitely the exception. In 1994, most but not ALL Browns jerseys featured "R" sleeve logos that were above, but now to the right of the numbers... Not to mention the addition of the NFL's 75th Anniversary patch. Long story short, I'm guessing this is a jersey from 1993.
Stover spent 18 season with the Browns/Ravens organization, and was the last active player to be with the Ravens since the Browns days. He retired as the NFL's fourth all-time leading scorer, with 2,004 points, and is a member of the Ravens Ring of Honor. He holds NFL records for the most consecutive point attempts (469), most consecutive games with a field goal (38), most points scored by a player in their 30s (1,113), oldest player to play in a Super Bowl and oldest player to score in a Super Bowl. There's little doubt that Stover will one day make the Pro Football Hall of Fame!
